While the world waits to see what First Lady Michelle Obama will wear on inauguration day, there is still plenty of style news surrounding the inauguration including designer collectibles and reflections on Michelle Obama’s previous fashion choices.

Here are some of the stories:

First Lady Michelle Obama set the style world on fire with her chic looks, which included a yellow lace dress and coat from Isabel Toledo, an ivory gown from Jason Wu, and a camel and black suit from Narciso Rodriguez.

Nobody in recent fashion history has been as watched (and admired) as First Lady Michelle Obama. Michelle Obama’s inaugural dresses — from a golden lace dress to an ivory ballgown — set the tone for a very stylish White House.

Sasha and Malia
“Pretty! Pretty! Pretty!” shouted my 6-year-old daughter as she caught a glimpse of Sasha and Malia Obama’s inauguration day looks. Both of the girls were dressed in Crewcuts, J. Crew’s kids’ line. If you’d like this look for your own budding fashion lover, you may be out of luck because J. Crew made these styles especially for the Obama girls. I really love that Michelle Obama chooses to dress her girls in age-appropriate clothing instead of letting them wear looks that are too grown up (like some 7- and 10-year-olds wear). One thing is for sure: the First Family really loves J. Crew.
The Obamas’ young daughters set the style standard for youngsters with their adorable, ribbon-belted Crewcuts looks for Inauguration Day.

Own a Piece of (Designer) History with Inaugural Collections
Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan and other major designers have created pieces especially for the inauguration. Tory Burch and DVF each did a canvas tote ($70) with their individual interpretations of President Obama. Zac Posen, Donna Karan and Derek Lam all created T-shirts ($45) and Alexander Wang has created a $40 scarf.

Michelle Obama’s Style: Sheath Dress
Michelle Obama’s favorite public appearance look features the no-nonsense, work-ready standby: the sheath dress. From long-sleeve to sleeveless sheaths, Michelle Obama favors the silhouette’s body-skimming cut that flatters both her height and her curves.

Michelle Obama’s Election Night Dress
She’s been named the best-dressed woman in the world, but Michelle Obama’s election night dress left some fans wondering if the First-Lady-to-be could still lead the style world. My vote’s in for Michelle Obama to still set a wonderful fashion vibe (in fact, many of the dress styles she wear work for most women); the red and black Narciso Rodriguez (thanks to Fashiontribes for digging up that one) that she wore on election night was simply ruined by a black cardigan. I know I’ve been guilty of tossing an errant sweater over a perfectly good outfit. But, then again, my hubby has never been named the leader-elect of the free world.
What do you think?

Michelle Obama’s Makeup for the Inauguration
Makeup artist Ingrid Grimes-Myles (MsIngrid) is the talented artist chosen to do Michelle Obama’s makeup for the Presidential Inauguration on Tuesday January 20th. She has worked with a multitude of politicians and celebrities in the past including the Obama’s, Colin Powell, Sarah Ferguson, Caroline Kennedy, Katie Couric, and many more. MsIngrid is very familiar with Mrs. Obama’s style and features, since she has done Michelle’s makeup in the past and has been a friend to the Obama’s for the past five years. So what will the new first lady wear for the inauguration? According to Marie Claire’s Australian website, she will be using Australia-based ModelCo’s Colorbox Eyeshadow for her daytime look. Unfortunately this will not be the case since MsIngrid’s communication director informed me that Mrs. Obama will not be endorsing any certain products and MsIngrid will come up with the appropriate color schemes depending on the event.

Michelle Obama’s Inaugural Hair
With the Presidential Inauguration just days away, there’s only one big question on my mind right now. How will Michelle Obama wear her hair?

The real man of the hour, Mrs. Obama’s long time hair stylist, Rahni Flowers of Van Cleef Hair Studio in Chicago will be flying in to Washington DC to style the new first lady’s hair for all the events that surround the inauguration, according to this article in the Chicago Tribune on January 13th.

I can’t imagine being responsible for the hair of the first lady for such an important series of events, but rest assured this isn’t Mr. Flowers’ first rodeo, as he was also the artist behind her look on election night. So, how will Rahni style Michelle for the inauguration? If history repeats itself, I can imagine that she’ll wear a soft, turned under style like in the photo here during the democratic national convention. Personally, I love her hair pulled into a soft, elegant updo, and with the amazing gown that she’ll likely be wearing, I can only imagine that an updo would be perfect.

There is nothing worse than getting dressed to the nines in a new outfit that you adore, and showing up to find someone wearing the exact same thing. By wearing vintage to special events like weddings, proms, and other formal occasions you will never have this problem.

The key to finding that perfect piece is to stick with classic dress silhouettes and make sure the item is in excellent condition with no signs of age or wear and tear. The second issue is not much a problem since special event dress are only worn a few times , but if they were not stored properly during their lifetime, there could be discoloration of silk or lace, loss of beads, sequins, etc., sagging from weight of beads, or moth damage.

Once you’ve found the right piece, you can modernize it and make it your own with accessories. Shoes, handbags and jewelry that are newer or follow current trends pull everything together. Conversely, you can use vintage accessories like hats, gloves, scarves, decorative hair ornaments, and jewelry to make a brand new outfit more original.

1. Decide on Formality:

Usually the event invitation will clue you into the formality of the event, whether it’s casual or black tie. But sometimes even that will cause confusion (short dress or long?)

In general, the later in the day the event (after 6 p.m.), the dressier. Long dresses are usually reserved only for formal (black tie) occasions.
While some fabrics are year-round — silk, brocade, organza, jersey — fabrics like velvet and gold spangles are best reserved for winter holidays.

2. Flatter Your Figure:
The most important feature of your new dress is how well it flatters you.

Remember that darker colors and simple cuts (a sheath, an A-line) are the most flattering.

Show off your best feature. If you have gorgeous eyes, then play them up with beautiful makeup, off-the-face hair and jeweled earrings in a complimentary shade.

Not sure what your best asset is? Ask a friend or significant other. Or go to a store that sells special occasion dresses and enlist the salesperson’s help.

3. Choose a Color:
You could just wear a little black dress (classy, flattering and slenderizing), but why not explore some of the other dressy options?

Red, bold prints, even gold are dramatic enough for evening wear. Pastels, mid-range brights and soft prints look great for dressy day occasions.

Blue (from navy to royal), pink (from cotton candy to fuchsia) and white (from candlelight to cream) look great on almost everyone. Remember that the “Don’t wear white to a wedding” wisdom is still considered a fashion don’t by most women.

4. Pick a Style:
Catalogs, the internet and magazines are a great places to seek special occasion dress inspiration.

Instead of going with something trendy, try to find a dress that reflects classic, timeless elegance. Remember that you’ll have to look at photos of you in the dress for years to come.

Classic special occasion dresses are often deceptively simple, but they usually let the beauty of the wearer shine through. A few examples: the little black dress (a.k.a the cocktail dress), a goddess gown (draped and ruched), a ballgown, a slip dress.

5. Shop:
Set a budget before shopping. Special occasion dresses usually cost more than $100, but if you comparison shop you can find one that works in your price range.

Shop secondhand stores and sales to save even more money on a dress.

If you shop in a store, dress for the day by bringing along heels, any special accessories you know you want to use and a strapless bra.

When shopping online, make sure you understand both the sizing (know your measurements and check against a size chart on the site) and the return policy (some stores don’t take returns on dresses.)

6. Accessorize:
The trimmings will take their cue from the dress, but for special occasions your jewelery usually gets bigger and your bag and shoes get smaller (as in strapped sandals).

Although you may want to add tons of glitz, remember that you can kill a look with too much match-match accessorizing. Find earrings, necklace and bracelet that compliment each other without being a matching set.

If your legs aren’t perfect enough to go bare need camouflage and you don’t like to wear leg makeup, then opt for super-sheer hose or fishnets.

What fashion trends will be relevant in 2009? Stylists and designers make a fashion-forecast for ladies and advise trends to be addressed first of all.

For example, next year one of the hottest trends in women fashion will be jumpers and jump suits. In collections of many designers there are also various options for mini-dresses.

Fashion houses Gucci, Marni and McQueen emphasize geometric prints. Generally vogue 2009 welcomes direct straight lines and free cutting in clothing.

As for fashionable colors, their variety will pleasantly surprise. Women are free to choose different shades: from pastel to bright light.

Fashionable bags-2009 include classic ladies cabs. Clutches with chains will be also very popular.

Perhaps, footwear trends will be the most surprising and unusual. For example, shoes, imitating metal frame, or delta-platform (in the form of a triangle). All most unusual will be actual.

However, fashion for massive jewelry will be kept. Must-have – gold jewels with graphical image, wide bracelets (can be made of wood).

Decoration of organics (molluscs, corals, shells) are also popular.
